What a 13F is (and isn't)

Any institutional investment manager with discretion over at least $100 million in “13(f) securities” has to file Form 13F-HR with the SEC each quarter, within 45 days of quarter-end. The filing lists each long position — issuer, CUSIP, share count and market value — and flags listed options as puts or calls.

It's the closest thing retail traders get to looking at a whale's hand. But it's last month's hand: by the time it's public, the fund may have folded the position, doubled it, or hedged it with something the 13F never shows.

How to read one without tilting

  • Check the period, not the filing date. A filing in mid-November describes September 30.
  • Weight beats count. A new position that's 0.1% of the fund is a probe; 10% is conviction.
  • Read puts and calls carefully. They're reported at the value of the underlying shares, and puts are often portfolio insurance.
  • Look at changes, not just holdings. New and increased positions vs. the prior quarter are where the decisions show up.
  • Remember what's missing. No shorts, no cash, no cost basis — you're seeing one side of the book.

FAQ

What is a 13F filing?

Form 13F-HR is a quarterly report that institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in qualifying US securities must file with the SEC. It lists their long positions in 13(f) securities — mostly US-listed stocks and ETFs, plus listed options reported as puts or calls on the underlying — as of the last day of the quarter.

How delayed is 13F data?

Managers have up to 45 days after quarter-end to file, so a filing can describe a portfolio that is already six weeks or more out of date. Positions may have been sold, hedged or added to since. Treat a 13F as a historical snapshot, not a live feed.

What doesn't a 13F show?

Short positions, cash, most bonds, non-US-listed securities, many derivatives, and cost basis are not reported. Funds can also request confidential treatment for some positions. A long stock line may be part of a hedged or pairs trade you can't see.

Why do 13F put and call values look so large?

For options, the reported value generally reflects the underlying shares the contracts control, not the premium paid. A large 'put' line is often a hedge rather than a directional bet, and its size says little about what the fund actually risked.

Where does TiltRadar get the data?

Directly from SEC EDGAR. We pull each tracked fund's latest 13F-HR and the prior one, compare them, and refresh daily. If EDGAR is unreachable we fall back to our last saved snapshot and say so on the page.

Should I copy a hedge fund's 13F?

Copying a 13F means buying positions up to months after the fund did, without knowing its hedges, sizing rules or exit plan. Use 13Fs for ideas and context, not as trade signals. Nothing here is investment advice.
