Methodology
The rules (first match wins)
- Contraction: Sahm rule ≥ 0.50, or ≤ 1 of 4 coincident indicators rising while the leading net score is ≤ 0.
- Recovery: ≤ 2 of 4 coincident indicators rising but the leading net score is ≥ +2 (leaders turning up first).
- Expansion: ≥ 3 of 4 coincident indicators rising and the leading net score is ≥ +2.
- Late cycle: ≥ 3 of 4 coincident indicators rising but the leading net score is between −1 and +1 (leaders stalling).
- Slowdown: anything else: leading net score ≤ −2 with activity still holding up, or weak activity without a clear turn.
The numbers
- Trend = latest reading vs. the reading ~6 months earlier (monthly and quarterly: 6 months back; weekly and daily: the observation nearest 26 weeks back). Jobless claims use a 4-week average.
- Flat band: small moves count as flat (for example ±1% for orders, ±0.15 hours, ±5 points for diffusion surveys, ±0.10 pts for spreads). Flat counts as 0.
- Direction: for claims, unemployment expectations, unemployment and inventories, falling is the supportive direction.
- Sahm rule = 3-month average unemployment rate minus its lowest 3-month average in the prior 12 months, computed directly from BLS Current Population Survey series
