Trading around earnings: the three ideas that matter
1. The move is already priced. Options going into a report carry extra implied volatility. The at-the-money straddle for the first expiry after the report is a rough read of the move the market expects — the “expected move.”
2. IV crush is the rake. Once results are out, that event premium usually drains fast. Buying options the day before a report means paying peak price for uncertainty that vanishes at the open. You need a move bigger than the expected move just to break even on that premium.
3. Direction is only half the bet. “Right on the beat, wrong on the trade” happens constantly. Before you click buy, write down the expected move, what you're paying for it, and what happens to your position if implied volatility falls by half. If you can't, you're gambling, not trading.
Tools that help you model this — P&L diagrams with an IV slider, implied-vs-realized earnings history — are in our best options trading tools ranking.

FAQ
Where do these earnings dates come from?
The upcoming list is hand-curated: every date is checked against the company's own investor-relations announcement or press release, which we link next to each row. The 'reported' list comes automatically from SEC EDGAR — 8-K filings that include Item 2.02, Results of Operations and Financial Condition.
What is IV crush?
Implied volatility usually climbs into a scheduled event like earnings because the market expects a bigger-than-normal move. Once the number is out, that uncertainty disappears and implied volatility typically drops sharply — often at the next open. Options lose the extra time value they were carrying, even if the stock moves.
What is the expected move?
It's the size of the move the options market is pricing for the event. A common rough estimate is the price of the at-the-money straddle (call plus put) for the first expiration after the report. It's a market-implied estimate, not a forecast of direction.
Why can I lose money buying calls on an earnings beat?
If the stock moves less than the move that was priced in, the drop in implied volatility can outweigh the gain from the move. Long premium into earnings needs a move bigger than the expected move to come out ahead.
What does 'before open' or 'after close' mean?
It's when the company says it will release results: before the regular session opens at 9:30 a.m. ET or after it closes at 4:00 p.m. ET. Where a company only gave a conference-call time, we show that instead.
